Everything you need to know about postpartum care

The postpartum period is the time after you have given birth, and it can be both amazing and challenging. Here are a few things you should know about this time.

  1. Your body is going through a lot of changes. You may be dealing with things like hormonal fluctuations, weight gain, and sleep deprivation.
  2. Your emotions may be all over the place. It’s normal to feel happy, sad, anxious, and overwhelmed all at the same time.
  3. You will need lots of support. Whether it’s from your partner, family, or friends, make sure you have people who can help you through this time.
  4. Give yourself time to adjust. It takes time to recover from childbirth and get used to your new role as a parent.
  5. Be patient with yourself. This is a learning process, and you will make mistakes. Just remember that you are doing the best you can!

Why do you need to prepare?

Having a baby is a big life change and your body will go through some big changes too. It’s important to give yourself time to recover and heal after childbirth. Preparing ahead of time with the right supplies will help you feel more comfortable and confident as you adjust to this new phase of life.

When I was pregnant, I read all the books and blogs about what to expect after childbirth. But even with all that knowledge, I still felt completely unprepared for those first few weeks post-baby. So, for all you new moms out there, here are a few essential items that will help you survive those early days (and nights) with a new baby.

Postpartum Essentials Must-Haves

  • A comfortable nursing bra: You will be spending a lot of time feeding your baby, so you want to make sure you have a nursing bra that is comfortable. You will probably want to have at least two or three comfortable nursing bras on hand. Look for ones with good support and easy access for nursing.
  • Mesh Underwear: This is a must-have for any new mom. Ask your doctor or midwife if these will be provided to you. If not, I highly suggest this purchase. After childbirth, you will be dealing with a lot of bleeding and discharge. Mesh underwear will help keep you feeling clean and dry, and save you from ruining all of your undies. If you choose to use your own underwear, you’ll need to stock up on some heavy, overnight pads.
  • Nipple cream: Your nipples will go through a lot during breastfeeding, so it’s important to keep them hydrated and protected. Nipple cream can help soothe sore or cracked nipples.
  • A good pump: If you are planning on pumping, make sure you get a good quality pump that will meet your needs.
  • Stool softener: This is a must for any new mom! A stool softener can help you stay regular and avoid constipation, which is common after childbirth.
  • Perineal ice packs: These can be a lifesaver after delivery. They will help reduce swelling and pain in your perineum (the area between your vagina and anus). You can even make your own homemade Padsicles for postpartum healing by using maxi pads and freezing them. Check out DIY Padsicles to learn how to make your own!
  • Tucks Wipes: These are great for cooling and soothing hemorrhoids, which are common after pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Dermoplast Spray: This is a cold, numbing spray that can be used to help relieve pain in the perineal area if you had any tearing.
  • Herbal Perineal Spray: This is a soothing spray that can be used to help heal any tearing or bruising.
  • Peri-bottle: This is a must-have for postpartum hygiene. A peri-bottle will help you cleanse your perineum after going to the bathroom.
  • A good probiotic: Probiotics are so important for gut health, and that is especially true after you’ve had a baby. A good probiotic can help with things like constipation, diarrhea, and gas.
  • A postpartum support belt or belly band: A support belt or belly band can help support your abdomen and lower back after delivery. It can also help with things like urinary incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse.
  • A support pillow: Whether you are breastfeeding or not, a good support pillow can make all the difference when it comes to getting comfortable and getting some rest.

Postpartum Mama Basket:

I like to keep all of these postpartum must-haves in a basket so I can easily grab them when I need them. That way, I don’t have to go hunting for things when I’m already feeling exhausted. I found a cute little basket to store everything in, and I keep it next to my bed. Definitely add in some extra bottles of water and snacks to the basket as well. You will be thankful for it!

Postpartum Recovery

Now that you have all of your postpartum essentials, it’s time to focus on recovery. Here are a few things that can help make the postpartum period a little easier.

  1. Get as much rest as you can: This is probably the most important thing you can do for yourself during those early weeks post-baby. Your body is going through a lot of changes, and it needs time to recover. So, take advantage of any opportunity you have to sleep, even if it’s just a short nap.
  2. Eat healthy: Eating nutritious foods will help your body heal and give you the energy you need to take care of your baby. Be sure to drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  3. Take your time: Don’t try to do too much too soon. Your body needs time to recover, so take it easy. Listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard.
  4. Ask for help: Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s help with the baby, housework, or just someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to reach out.

These are just a few things that can help you through the postpartum period. Remember to take care of yourself and listen to your body. And most importantly, enjoy this precious time with your new baby.

Postpartum Support

If you are struggling after childbirth, there is help available. Here are a many resources that can offer support and assistance.

  • A postpartum support group: A postpartum support group can be a great way to connect with other new moms and get some much-needed support. These groups can provide a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings, and they can also be a great source of information.
  • Your partner: Lean on your partner for support during this time. They can help with things like taking care of the house and taking care of the baby while you recover.
  • Your friends and family: Don’t forget about your support system! Your friends and family can be a great source of help and support. So, don’t hesitate to reach out to them if you need anything.
  • A postpartum doula: If you’re looking for some extra support, a postpartum doula can be a great resource. A doula can provide physical, emotional, and practical support during the postpartum period.

The postpartum period can be a difficult time for many women. But with the right support and care, it can also be a time of healing and growth. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it. And take care of yourself during this special time.
