As soon as the school year ends, I start to feel a sense of relief. No more homework, no more early morning wake-ups, no more rush-hour traffic or fighting with my kids to do the basic morning tasks. But then the time comes to start thinking about the next school year and I start to feel the panic set in. Will my kids be ready for the new grade? Have they retained everything they learned last year? How will I keep up with their homework and extracurricular activities while also managing my own work and home life?

The key to making the back to school transition easier is preparation. By taking some time to plan ahead, you can make sure that the first few weeks of school are as smooth as possible. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Start preparing for back to school in July – Start by creating a list of everything your child will need for school.
  2. Get organized: One of the best ways to reduce stress is to get organized. Create a system for tracking your child’s homework assignments, school forms, and important dates. This will help you stay on top of things and make it easier to find what you need when you need it.
  3. Stock up on school supplies and clothes. Usually the stores will have the supply list from the school so you can buy everything at once. This will save you time and money in the long run.
  4. Shop for the items on sale and use coupons when possible.
  5. Label everything! This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to label all of your child’s belongings. This will help them keep track of their things and it will also help the teachers if something gets lost.
  6. Organize your child’s backpack and school materials so they can find everything easily. This will help them be more independent and organized.
  7. Create a homework station with all the supplies your child will need. Get into the habit of setting aside time each day for homework and stick to it. This will help your child be more prepared when school starts and make it easier for you to keep up with their homework.
  8. Stock up on healthy snacks and drinks to have in the house.
  9. Create a daily schedule: A daily schedule can help both you and your child know what to expect each day and can help you stay organized. Be sure to include time for breakfast, lunch, snacks, homework, extracurricular activities, and down time.
  10. If your child is involved in any extracurricular activities, make sure you know when practices start and games are scheduled. You don’t want to be caught off guard by a last minute practice or game.
  11. Get in the habit before school starts by packing lunches the night before and laying out clothes.
  12. Set a regular bedtime routine and stick to it as much as possible.
  13. Get enough sleep: This one is important for both you and your child. Start getting into a bedtime routine a few weeks before school starts so that everyone is well-rested when the new school year begins.
  14. Get into a morning routine before the first day of school – have breakfast together, get dressed, brush teeth, etc.
  15. On the first day of school, relax and don’t worry – your child is prepared and ready to go!
