The Truth About Motherhood: How It Changes You Forever

There’s no getting around it: motherhood changes you. For better or for worse, becoming a mom affects every aspect of your life. Some women find that they instantly become more patient and loving after giving birth. Others feel like they’ve been transformed into a completely different person – one who is now responsible for another human being. While the changes vary from woman to woman, one thing is for sure: motherhood is a life-altering experience.

Motherhood changes you

Motherhood changed me in many ways. For one, I no longer have the freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want. My kids comes first, and everything else has to fit around their schedule. Gone are the days of spontaneous nights out or last-minute trips. Now, everything needs to be planned in advance – and even then, there’s no guarantee that it will go according to plan.

Another way motherhood has changed me is by making me more selfless. Before I had my kids, I was all about me. But now, I find myself constantly putting their needs before my own. Whether it’s getting up in the middle of the night to feed or spending my days off at the park with them, I’m always thinking about what’s best for them.

So what does motherhood actually do to you? Here are some of the ways that becoming a mom can change you forever:

The Good:

  1. You develop a whole new level of patience. And your kids will most definitely put it to the test.
  2. You become more selfless.
  3. You develop a greater capacity for love.
  4. You learn to love unconditionally. You learn to love in a way that you never thought possible.
  5. You become more nurturing and loving. You suddenly have this overwhelming urge to nurture and love another human being, and it’s an amazing feeling.
  6. You develop a stronger sense of responsibility.
  7. You become more organized.
  8. You learn to prioritize.
  9. You learn to multi-task like a pro.
  10. You gain a greater appreciation for life. You suddenly realize how precious life is and how quickly it can all change. You learn to appreciate the little things and cherish every moment.

The Bad:

  1. You lose your freedom.
  2. You lose your privacy.
  3. Your body changes. Your once-toned body is now softer and rounder, and you might have some extra skin (aka stretch marks) to show for it.
  4. You have less free time. Suddenly, every minute of your day is planned out and there’s no such thing as “me time.”
  5. You might feel like you’re losing your identity. With everything that’s going on, it’s easy to forget who you used to be before you became a mom.
  6. You have to sacrifice a lot of things.
  7. You worry more.
  8. You have to be more careful about what you say and do.
  9. You can’t just up and leave whenever you want.
  10. You have to think about someone other than yourself all the time.
  11. Your social life changes drastically.
  12. You get a lot less sleep.

The Truth:

  1. You will never be the same person again. This is probably the most accurate statement about motherhood. You are changed forever after becoming a mom. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just the way it is. Embrace it!
